L’Antarctique est le lieu de grands défis scientifiques couplés à un enjeu stratégique majeur pour l’État français et les relations internationales. Les impacts du changement climatique et des activités anthropiques sur la biodiversité et les pressions géopolitiques et économiques croissantes renforcent le besoin de resserrer l’interface science/décision/gestion.
La ZATA : une source d’ancrage territorial et de transdisciplinarité
La Zone Atelier Antarctique et Terres Australes (ZATA) concerne un vaste territoire terrestre et marin au sein des Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises. À travers notamment la mise en place de suivis à long terme, les recherches menées ont pour objectif d’étudier et de prédire les changements qui s’opèrent au sein des écosystèmes à différentes échelles sous la double contrainte des activités humaines et des modifications du climat.
La ZATA constitue également un laboratoire privilégié pour l’expérimentation des principes de gouvernance des socio-écosystèmes en rapport avec les enjeux de protection écologique et de souveraineté géopolitique.
Le principe de solidarité écologique peut y être testé en raison de la spécificité de ces territoires : peu d’humains, un fort intérêt symbolique et stratégique, une pêcherie limitée et contrôlée permettant des expérimentations grandeur-nature et une interface resserrée entre science et gestion.
